Boulder City is clean, green and the only city in Nevada without gaming, and the home of the State's number one tourist attraction, Hoover Dam. This is a wholesome family oriented community with a big retirement set, that takes pride in its low crime rate and high quality police and fire protection. Boulder City is ideally located between the entertainment and excitement of Las Vegas and the recreation paradise of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, North America's largest man-made lake.

Boulder City was created for the construction of Hoover Dam. Once the dam was completed, the Federal Government changed the basic function of the city to headquarter several agencies involved in the dam's water and power operations. All the land in and around the city was owned by the Federal Government. In 1958, the Boulder City Act was passed, establishing an independent municipal government, turning over to the citizens 34.5 square miles of land; approximately four square miles are developed. In 1979, a controlled growth ordinance was passed, which limits the number of residential and hotel or motel building permits issued each year. In 1995 the City acquired additional land, making Boulder City's city limits encompass a total of 200 square miles.

Tourism is a primary economic force in Boulder City, with approximately one million visitors to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead National Recreation Area each year. Local businesses offer a complete range of retail services. Industrial uses, primarily "light industrial" in character, occupied 66.41 acres in 1990 (in comparison to 11 acres in 1964).
